At St Peter Claver's profession he vowed "to be a slave of the slaves forever," and soon he began to carry out that promise. Though his primary concern for the slaves was their salvation, he understood that their bodily miseries needed attention first. "We must speak to them with our hands by giving," he said, "before we can speak to them with our lips." St Peter Claver baptized over 300,000 African slaves.
"To love God as He ought to be loved, we must be detached from all temporal love. We must love nothing but Him, or if we love anything else, we must love it only for His sake."
